Best Electric Station Wagons 2022

Best Electric Station Wagons 2022: Much like minivans, station wagons have been unfairly stereotyped as an unpopular body style, but in reality there’s much to love about these longroofs. Thanks to their open cargo areas and right-angle rooflines, they’re as adept at carrying people and cargo as some SUVs. Not only that, but station wagons also have a lower center of gravity, which gives them the athleticism of a car.

While automakers are trying to make them look more SUV-like by adding body cladding and taller suspensions, their all-weather capability and aforementioned characteristics still make them one of our favorite body styles.

The notion of an electric station wagon is quite a peculiar mix of new and old ideas, but nothing says cutting edge like a modernized retro classic. Minivans replaced station wagons back in the 80s, and many people have all but forgotten about them now that SUVs and crossovers are dominating the scene.

However, the rise of electric cars has seen a significant improvement in fuel economy figures, which was always the bane of the cumbersome body type. EV station wagons may very well be the lifeline for the once-beloved vehicles, though only a few automakers seem bold enough to bet on the dark horse.

The Characteristics of an EV Station Wagon

These are the characteristics that define an EV wagon:

Powertrain: You can’t have an EV wagon without an electric powertrain, which comprises electric motors and high-capacity batteries. These potent, silent setups deliver excellent performance and fuel economy ratings. Getting to full charge does take much longer than refueling a gas tank, but the savings are worth it.

Performance: Electric motors are known for their instantaneous kick, which is a defining quality of the EV class. These wagons are particularly enjoyable to drive, with rapid 0-60 mph times of under four seconds in some derivatives.

Appearance: New electric vehicles tend to turn heads with their futuristic designs that buck traditional style trends. Now, combine that with the divisive wagon body style, and you get something truly unique. Whether or not this is for the best will depend on the shopper, as taste is subjective.

Pricing: The cost of EVs is still one of the biggest barriers buyers have to overcome, especially in markets like the USA, where people want the most value for their money. However, as more and more brands get on board the electrification bandwagon, the price is dropping significantly.

What to Consider When Buying an EV Wagon

Though we don’t have a great many models to examine, electric wagons have proven that the benefits of the technologies used do outweigh the disadvantages.

Advantages

Improved fuel efficiency

Strong, instantaneous power

Are there any electric station wagons?

In the USA, the only EV station wagon currently for sale is the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, also available as a Turbo model. In Europe, there is the MG5, but it likely won’t make the trip across the pond.

What is the most powerful station wagon?

When it comes to power and speed, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo is king. With 750 horsepower under the hood, or rather at the wheels where the motors are, it sprints from 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds. Charging the battery takes around 10.5 hours on a Level 1 outlet and a maximum range of around 200 miles.

What is the most expensive station wagon?

Unsurprisingly, the most potent EV wagon is also the priciest. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo will cost you around $190,000.

Will Tesla make a station wagon?

Tesla has toyed with the idea of a station wagon, having designed and sold a one-of-a-kind Tesla Model SB. However, there are no plans to create a product line using the body style.

What happened to station wagons?

With the rise of minivans in the 80s, station wagons decreased in popularity. This was exacerbated by the crossover and SUV wave in the last decade. With the stigma of station wagons being seen as old-fashioned gas-guzzlers, there hasn’t been much demand. But, with the advent of new technology such as electric power coupled with the attractive looks of a sports station wagon, we have high hopes for a comeback.

List of The Best Electric Station Wagons

Here is a list of the best electric station wagon models:

Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo

The Porsche Taycan is the Best Electric Station Wagons 2022. it continues to sell strongly globally, so it’s no surprise that the automaker has expanded the Taycan family with the Taycan Sport Turismo. Essentially a recalibrated, less rugged version of the Taycan Cross Turismo, this wagon is a powerful performer while also being quite practical for daily use.

The new Sport Turismo GTS generates nearly 600 horsepower, and it’s not far off the pace of the much more expensive Taycan Turbo sedan. This is the only Sport Turismo variant that will be sold in the US, while Europe gets a broader lineup. Porsche believes that the GTS is the perfect combination of performance and utility for US customers, but is it? Let’s find out.

Performance and Range

In Europe, there’s a base RWD Taycan Sport Turismo along with a more potent 4S and a pair of blisteringly quick Turbo models. The base model with the smaller battery makes 321 hp when operating normally, and the Turbo S variant makes up to 750 hp in overboost mode.

Rather than offer the same lineup in the US market, Porsche elected to sell only the Taycan Sport Turismo GTS here. Exclusively equipped with a 93.4-kWh battery and sending power to all four wheels, its outputs are 509 hp normally or 590 hp with overboost, allowing for a 0-60 mph time in a scant 3.5 seconds.

In terms of charging, replenishing the battery from 5-80% will take just over 22 minutes, or a five-minute charge can add 62 miles of range.

Price And Competition

As far as electric station wagons go, there are currently no other alternatives to the Taycan Sport Turismo besides Porsche’s own Taycan Cross Turismo, so it’s up to you to decide whether you want your wagon to be entirely road-focused or a bit more capable, as is the case with the latter.

The Taycan Sport Turismo is a superb wagon. It’s not only practical, but it possesses unique looks and a driving experience that is highly likely to be more engaging than that of a Tesla Model S. That being said, if it’s range you’re after, the Model S is still much better.

The new Taycan Sport Turismo GTS will cost $133,300. By comparison, the dual-motor Model S costs $94,990 and the devastatingly quick Model S Plaid goes for $129,990. Another non-wagon alternative is the Lucid Air which begins at just $77,400.

Although it’s certainly expensive, the Taycan Cross Turismo GTS is a brilliant EV and well worth considering over the gas-powered Panamera Sport Turismo. The GTS is expected to arrive in the US next quarter.

Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo

The 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is on of the Best Electric Station Wagons 2022 offered in Turbo and Turbo S trims. Both models are powered by a dual-motor setup, with the Turbo S producing a maximum power output of 750 horsepower. Power is sent to all four wheels via a two-speed automatic transmission at the back and a single-speed transmission in front.

The exterior of the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo features LED headlights and a fixed panoramic roof. Inside, there’s dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, a 14-speaker Bose sound system, and driver assistance features such as lane-keep assist and traffic sign recognition. The Turbo S adds a set of carbon-ceramic brakes, rear-axle steering, and 18-way power front seats.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

With the Taycan Cross Turismo, Porsche is taking a bit of a gamble, which is very un-German. Does the world really need a Taycan-based quasi-off-road wagon? The Taycan Cross Turismo is like the Panamera Sport Turismo, but with electric propulsion, a slight increase in ride height, and some off-road-inspired design details. And though it has an eAWD system, you won’t see it tackling the Rubicon Trail anytime soon.

In our opinion, this might just be the most crucial Taycan model, if only because it feeds the USA’s insatiable appetite for crossover- and SUV-like ruggedness. Whether it can actually go off-road is utterly irrelevant.

People don’t buy crossovers to cross over anything and the same will be true of this sporty wagon in most cases. They’re a lifestyle statement, telling the world that you’re the adventurous type and that you spend hours binge-watching Bear Grylls. The Taycan Cross Turismo currently sits in a class of one. Still, you can compare it to the AWD Audi A6 allroad in terms of its raised wagon stance and the famous Tesla Model X for its powerful electric powertrain.

With up to 562 horsepower, does the Taycan Cross Turismo have the guts to take on the SUV that gives most supercars a spanking over the quarter-mile? And is it enough of a practical wagon to consider choosing it over the regular Taycan? Let’s find out.

Performance

Both all-wheel-drive models are equipped with two AC permanent synchronous motors, powered by the 93.4-kWh Performance Battery Plus. The motor at the front axle is smaller and mated to a single-speed transmission, while the larger rear motor is coupled to a 2-speed transmission.

The reason for the 2-speed transmission? It allows the rear electric motor to spin at a lower rpm at higher speeds. It’s not really applicable to the USA, where the fastest you can legally drive is 85 mph. In Germany, where the autobahn lives, you can keep up with the fast-flowing traffic.

Porsche quotes two power outputs for both models. The base 4’s electric motors produce 375 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. The overboost power output with launch control engaged is said to be 469 hp. The 4S is rated at 482 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, increasing to 562 hp in overboost mode.

Thanks to the instant power delivery, both cars are rapid off the line. The 4 can get to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while the 4S gets there in 3.9 seconds. Both feel faster due to the unique power delivery of an EV, however. The 4 tops out at a relatively low 137 mph, while the 4S can get to 149 mph.
